Overview of Kaho
Kaho is a small village in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, strategically located on the banks of the Lohit River. It lies at an altitude of 1,240 meters (4,070 feet) and is the easternmost inhabited village of India, making it historically significant as the “first village” of the country.
Despite its remote location, Kaho offers an enriching cultural experience, primarily inhabited by the Meyor community, who are Buddhists. The village is situated approximately 580 kilometers east of Itanagar, the state capital, and is surrounded by pristine natural beauty, including dense forests and the scenic Lohit River. It is also one of the seven villages in the Kibithoo block, a region divided by the Lohit River, which enhances its unique charm.
The village is accessible by footbridges and Bailey bridges, which connect it to neighboring regions, adding to the adventure of reaching this off-the-beaten-path destination. Kaho will soon be promoted as the “First Village of India” by the team from Discover FarEast with support from the district administration, drawing attention to its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Places You Will See
In Kaho and its surrounding areas, you’ll encounter a variety of captivating sights. The Lohit River, which flows gracefully through the village, divides the landscape into picturesque banks and offers scenic views, making it perfect for trekking and exploring the nearby forests. Kaho’s proximity to the India-China Line of Actual Control (LAC) adds a historical and strategic layer to the region. Although access is restricted, it provides a unique opportunity to understand India’s border areas and their significance. The village itself is home to the Meyor community, known for their Buddhist faith and simple way of life. Visitors can explore traditional wooden homes, immerse in the local culture, and witness the timeless practices passed down through generations.
The region is also dotted with Bailey and Suspension Bridges, which connect the west and east banks of the Lohit River, serving as impressive architectural feats that add to the rustic charm of the area. For those seeking more adventure, the Diphu Pass, located 30 km west of Kaho, offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and lies near the India-China-Myanmar tri-junction, a significant geographic landmark. This high-altitude pass is a perfect spot for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
